Focus
The Chair will in particular be concerned with the interrelations between journalism and
society. The focus will be on the study of definitions of and developments within
journalism, journalistic practioners’ recruitment and professional composition, the legal,
political, and economic frameworks within which journalism operates, journalistic work
processes, and the consequent products.
Location
The position is located at the Department of Communication Science at the University of
Amsterdam (UvA). Some 1.300 Bachelor and Master students are enrolled in the
Department’s teaching programs, while the research is located at The Amsterdam School
of Communications Research ASCoR, part of the KNAW-accredited national research
school NESCoR. The Department has about 70 (inter)national faculty and PhD students.
The chair will be a part of the Media, Journalism and Public Opinion (MJPO) program group.
Key tasks
The professor is expected to contribute to :
Teaching at the BA, MA, RMA, and PhD levels
Tesearch in the MJPO program group and the ASCoR research program
Acquisition of national science foundation grants and/or other research grants
PhD supervision
Management tasks within the MJPO program group and in the longer term also at the level
of institute or department.
Requirements
A candidate for this vacancy has :
A PhD in a relevant discipline, preferably communication science, or at least with a wide
knowledge of communication science broadly
In-depth knowledge of international journalism studies in theory and practice, proven by
publications in prominent international journals and by acknowledged publishers
Knowledge of journalistic `conditions’ and the role of media policies and governance
therein
Clear empirical-analytic research profile
Expertise in research and teaching surrounding journalistic processes of production and
how these relate to processes within and outside of media organizations such as laws and
societal expectations, and able to relate these processes to media contents production
Knowledge of or interest in Dutch media and political systems in relation to other
European political systems
Broad research experience
Broad teaching experience
Capacity to fulfill a stimulating role in teaching, research, and management
Proven capacity to acquire research grants from national science foundation and other
organizations, and manage those projects
Capacity to eventually fulfill leading positions in the department, teaching- or research
institute
Position & Benefits
This tenured positions is for 38 hrs per week (1.0 fte) and has a 1 year test period. Gross
salary scales for this position based on fulltime employment range from € 4.697 to
€ 6.841 gross per month, depending on previous experience.
